Voter ID linking with Aadhar card will also be mandatory! Central government is ready to make laws
The Law Ministry has agreed to link the Aadhar Card with the Voter ID with some conditions. In February 2015, the Election Commission also started an exercise to link Aadhaar with Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC). But this exercise was also stopped after the Supreme Court ordered a ban on the use of Aadhaar in Public Distribution System (PDS), LPG and kerosene distribution.
After the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA 2019), there is a debate about identity documents across the country. Meanwhile, news is coming that the government may bring a law to make it mandatory to link voter ID (Aadhar) to Voter ID. The Law Ministry has accepted the suggestion received by the Election Commission in this regard. The ministry is preparing a cabinet note for this law. It will be presented before the Cabinet Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the Law Ministry has clearly stated that in the process, arrangements should be made to eliminate the possibility of data theft.

Law Ministry has given conditional consent
The law ministry has agreed with some conditions to link the Aadhaar card with the voter ID. After the approval of the Law Ministry, the Election Commission can get the legal right to link the Voter ID to the Aadhaar card. Earlier in February 2015, the Election Commission started the exercise of linking Aadhaar with Voter Photo Identity Card (EPIC). At that time HS Brahma was the Chief Election Commissioner. However, the Supreme Court prohibited the use of Aadhaar in public distribution system (PDS), LPG and kerosene distribution. After this the exercise was stopped. However, before this the Election Commission had linked 38 crore voter card with Aadhaar.

Preparation for change in public representation law
Some changes are being made in the Representation of People Act, 1951 by the Law Ministry. However, right now the Law Ministry is looking into every aspect related to this issue. Under this, the risk of theft of information of any person will be tested. It is expected that this law may come in the budget session. Let the Election Commission write a letter to the Law Secretary in August 2019, proposing amendments to the Representation of the People Act 1950 and the Aadhaar Act 2016 so that the voter list may be disturbed. According to the proposed amendment, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) can ask the voters for their Aadhaar numbers to be added to the voter list.
Will help in removing fake voters
The Election Commission argued that seeding of voter cards along with Aadhaar would help in removing duplicate entries and fake voters. The amendment also states that in the event of not providing the Aadhaar number, no name will be removed from the voter list nor will they be prevented from giving enrollment. According to the Lok Sabha elections 2019 data, there are about 90 crore voters in the country. About the same number of people have an Aadhaar card. Earlier, an order was issued by the government to link Aadhaar card and PAN card. Deadline has been given till 31 March 2020 to link Aadhaar-PAN.
